How an Applicant Tracking System can help you find the right candidate

Tags: Recruitment Process, Recruitment Transformation

Finding the right candidate for the job is what recruitment is all about. Whatever work your company does, if you can get the right person for the role, it will help your business grow and thrive. However, searching for someone who ticks all the boxes can be daunting.

If you get the wrong person, both parties are left frustrated and out of pocket. Candidates may have relocated or turned down other roles, while recruiters will have wasted money on things like job ads, interviewing and training. It’s a huge problem all round when a new starter doesn’t quite fit a company.

That’s where an applicant tracking system (ATS) works its magic. An ATS gives you all the tools to make informed decisions and the right choices when it comes to filling vacancies. In this post, we outline some of the benefits and features of an ATS designed specifically for finding the right candidate.

Customise the recruitment process

The more information you can get about a candidate at the start of the recruitment process, the more likely you are to know if they will be a good fit. With an ATS, you can customise every last detail of the candidate journey.

That means you can ask specific questions related to each position and gather detailed information about candidates. By gaining an accurate picture of who a candidate is and what makes them tick, you can then decide how suitable they are for your company.

Provide the chance to shine

It’s hard to really know a candidate just from looking at their CV. However, an ATS with integrated video interviewing tools will give you a much better picture. It gives you the opportunity to see and hear them in person, and the candidate chance to express who they are and why they’re a good fit.

An ATS also provides upload features that allow candidates to upload their portfolio of previous work. Instead of relying on a 2D CV,  they can demonstrate their skills and give you a much better idea about whether they will be right for the role.

Offer a quality careers site

Of course, as a company you need to attract the best people for the job, so it’s important that you have the tools to show who you are too. That’s where a fantastic careers site can make all the difference.

The very best systems will let you add employee testimonials, rich media and video content. There are companies using video to give candidates an idea of where they will work and who their team will be. It’s an area where an ATS can really help you show your company values and culture.

Communicate clearly

For both parties to get off on the right foot, a clear communication process is vital. Recruiters can use an ATS to create automated email messages that get sent at key points in the recruitment process. These can be not only branded, but branded for each department within a business e.g. Tesco Bank, Tesco Pharmacy.

This means candidates are always well-informed and you can communicate with them at exactly the right time without having to manually manage thousands of emails. You can even automate emails to chase candidates up when it’s getting close to deadline time for applications. And different parts of your business can brand communications to their specific requirements.

Tone of voice plays a big part in good communications too. Being able to draft and send automated emails means every candidate receives the same content. It also helps you maintain a consistent tone that describes who you are and meets your brand values.

Build a clear onboarding experience

Once you’ve made a decision and hired someone for a position, it’s all about getting off to a good start. An ATS will help you do that by providing a great onboarding experience. Before your new employee even starts, you’ll be able to issue contracts, collect key information such as next of kin and uniform size, and help get them ready for their first day.

Then when they are in the role, the onboarding can continue through video training, questionnaires and anything else that might help them settle in. Your ATS is there to help you guide new recruits through the entire journey and make them feel welcome in your company. That you can use it as an ongoing process means it can also help you retain key staff that suit your culture.
